Directions: Sledding hill at Franke Park. In order to find the hill, you must turn in off of Sherman Street, just north of Franke Park Elementary School, and south of the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo. The main road in the park will fork, it is easiest to turn left. Follow that drive until it ends. You will drive past a playground, and a huge field. You will take the first right you see, and then just go straight! You will go through some trees, and then past a BMX track, down a hill, and into a parking lot. You will see the hill from there!

Comments: There are two sides to the hill. One side is smooth and fast. The other side will launch you airborne. This is the only hazard, it's more scary than dangerous if you are careful.

Directions: Sledding hill at the intersection of Clinton and Creighton in Larez Park.

Comments:Used in the summer for off-roading fun. Highest earth point in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Multiple sled paths ... some more tree infested than others. All in all an excellent way to spend a snowy day. It puts Franke Park to shame! Watch out for bumps if you want to save your tailbone.

Directions: Located on the corner of Ford Rd and Mulberry St in Zionsville, a Northwest suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. Plenty of parking at Mulberry Fields park, but the sledding hill is on the opposite side of the park from the parking spaces.

Comments: The sledding hill has a winding pathway to make it easier to climb, but can also be climbed by walking up the face of the hill. The hill is sloped from top to bottom as well as from left to right. This creates a gradual increase in steepness and height of the hill so it is perfect for younger kids on the far left of the hill and awesome for older/more adventurous sledders on the far right. Not the longest sledding hill, but if you want to avoid the crowds and are sledding with people of all ages, this place fits the bill.

Comments: The parking is right next to the hills, both a smaller hill and larger hill. There is also a very nice facility with indoor bathrooms and usually a fire in the fireplace. Beware... there are trees to the sides of the hills and it is sometimes possible to reach them. Please note...this is a County Park that is patrolled and closes at dusk.

Directions: Sledding at New Albany Riverfront Park at the levee. It is easily accessed via Pearl Street or Water Street in New Albany (see google link here)

Comments: Parking is available on both side of the levee surrounding New Albany Riverfront Park and Amphitheater. If parking on the protected/city side of the levee, there are ~50 steps to climb to the top of the levee. Alternative public parking is available on the river-facing side as well. About 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile of the levee is accessible for sledding. There are some small trees near the base (spaced in a line ~every 30-50 feet). Some portions of the levee provide adequate stopping before approaching the public access road near the base; however there are a couple areas where you could slide across the road if if you have a good sled. Traffic is governed by 10mph speed limit and is very low to non-existent except for people coming to sled. It is also well patrolled by city police at 5mph. It is a wonderful place to sled as long as you have about 3 inches of snow. The park is located near I-265 Sherman Minton Bridge and provides a wonderful view of the lower Ohio River below the McAlpine Dam and Lock system.

Comments: Lot's of parking and about a 1/4 mile walk to the actual place to go sledding. Easy access walking up the hill from either side. The ends of the hill are lesser grade then the middle. You land in a wheat field, so no fear of getting hurt by trees.

Directions: Sledding hill at Martinsville City Park, 360 N Home Ave.

Comments: This is a GREAT hill to sled on. It is a tradition to go sleding on this in on snow days. There are big hills and small hills so it is great for children of all ages. It can get busy if a snow day but if we just have snow & school is in you can sled the hill all day. Hardest part is walking up!

Feb. 9, 2010 Update: Hill was only slightly crowded. Steep hike, and had to look out for lazy kids that only wanted to walk halfway up and then sled out in front of you (I'm a 215 lb 6'3" adult male and absolutely pancaked a kid on my first run). Friendly crowd though, and the park has set up hay bails to keep you from sliding towards the fence enclosing the pool. Very smooth until about halfway down and the going gets bumpy before flattening back out. Had a ton of fun today tubing on a 20" tire innertube fully inflated.

Comments: Inflatable sleds are highly recommended, as there are some wicked bumps on the hill. The toboggan run is also great fun. Just be sure to get there early. You often have to take a number and wait around a while to get your toboggan, and the line to the run gets longer later in the day.

Directions: Sledding at LaSalle Park, near the Charles Black Recreation Center, 3419 W. Washington, South Bend.

Comments: This man-made hill has long been a favorite for sledding and tubing on South Bend's relatively flat west-side. 'Awesome hill with no trees,' is how Angie Henry described the sledding area. One drawback of this sledding area is that one side of the hill faces a large pond, while the other side (the safe side to sled on) descends on to flat soccer fields. Parents should warn their kids not to sled on the lake side of the hills.

Comments: Easy to access and with lots of space to spread out, the hills in Rum Village Park offer a variety of sledding option. But Jeanette Hodges Lymburner warns that the park's large trees can make sledding in the area dangerous. Another concern is that several of the hills end along a busy stretch of Ewing Avenue.

Directions: The sledding hills are technically at Murdock Park (off Cason St.), but everyone calls it Murdock Park which can say that it is owned by the Murdock Elementary School which it is, but you wouldn't think it is if you didn't go to Murdock or know better.

Comments: The parking is right along the side of the hill and true there probably isnt very many people out there but sometimes you can get a big crowd but everyone is usually considerate of other people or just ignore each other. This sledding hill actually has two spots and the one by the street has less area to stand on it is also steeper but shorter.

2013 UPDATE: "Recently the city of Columbia City no longer allows sledding at the hill I submitted in 2012. It's the only hill submitted located in Whitley County. A new baseball diamond was built and fencing was put up making it impossible to sled as well as prohibited. Thanks just thought I would let you know. --- Cassie"
