Directions: Sledding hill spot at a quarry close to the intersection of 137th Avenue and Padden Parkway. There are multiple hills on the outsides of this quarry. Some are very steep and others are much more gradual. Comments: When it snows there are usually a few jumps that people make. There is an Albertson's with ample parking very close by. The far side is private property, but the front is public and legal to sled on. The quarry is called the "pit" by most of the kids in the neighborhood. SEATTLE STREET SLEDDING:
Seattle streets are always popular, especially hills such as East Denny Way from Capitol Hill (Video) to downtown, Dravus Street in Magnolia Seattle (Video), and the Counterbalance on Queen Anne Avenue (Video). But Seattle police warn that people caught sledding down Seattle streets -- closed or not -- could get a $112 fine, as outlined in section 11.40.250 of the Seattle Municipal Code. However, in past snowstorms, police haven't given loads of sledding tickets. They urge people to use common sense (unlike in this video here). Directions: Sledding hills at Jackson Park Golf Course. I-5 to NE 145th St. exit, right on NE 145th St., right on 15th Ave NE, right on NE 135th St., where NE 135th St. ends, turn right into golf course parking lot. Comments: As a kid, my dad and I would go to a big hill on the back 9 at Jackson Park. The fourth hole on the short 9 was also good for smaller kids. It's legal to go sledding at city-run golf courses in Seattle. Directions: The eastern side of View Ridge Park, on NE 70th Street and 45th Ave. NE is a great place for sledding, although it being a bit short of a hill. For a longer hill, walk up the stairs to the east, and through the playground of neighboring View Ridge Elementary School. The hill at the east edge of the playfield is longer, just as steep, and with an entire playfield to run out onto. Comments: Parking is ample and free up and down the city streets. Both these hills are definitely better for younger kids and beginners, as they're not the longest. Still, my 5 and 8 year old kids thought they were great! Directions: S.W. side of Mt. Rainier, along Highway 706 at Paradise.
Comments: The snow play area at Paradise from December to April, open until dusk daily. The park constructs a supervised snow play area here in early December; no snow sliding is allowed before that time to protect the vegetation. If there isn't an ample amount of snow, then the area won't open. The area is very popular place for inner tubes, saucers, or other soft sliding toys (no wooden toboggans or sleds with metal runners are allowed), but bring your own, since they are not available for rent. Compressed air is also available for inflating tubes. An admission fee of $10 per vehicle valid for seven days is required for entry to the park. Directions: Sledding hill located at College Place Middle school. 7501 208th Street Southwest Comments: It is small but it is also very fun. It is easy to build jumps at the bottom.
