Directions: Take Hwy 51 to Milwaukee St. to Radar Hill. The land is apart of Hiestand Park. Comments: Largest sled riding hill in Madison. This is where the second hole is when the weather is warm. This is one major drop. The hill has sort of a basin shape, so only a few people can go down at a time. There is also a small hump/jump on the right side for those more adventurous. In addition, there are two smaller hills, one being a very small bunny hill for the real young, and another that is steeper and longer for those not brave enough to challenge Radar Hill. |
Directions: Elver Park. Located on McKenna right before it turns into Gammon. Comments: Some say that this is the best hill in the area, but Radar Hill lovers would beg to differ. The sled riding hill gets really slick and iced over after a very short time. There are three main hills. One is at the first hole of the disc golf course. This hill is the smallest, least steep hill. This one is nice because it was less crowded. The second highest is on the second half of the second disc golf hole. This one is longer than the first and a bit steeper. This one was also fairly uncrowded. The last, and biggest hill is at the front end of the second disc golf hole. This hill is very wide, which allows for many to ride at once. The middle of the hill has a series of bumps, so beware when going down. Update data provided by Dane101.com. |
Directions: Huegel Hill at Huegel Elementary School, 2601 Prairie Rd. Comments: It has two really good sled riding sides on it, one that's a little steeper than the other. Another good thing is that it is not over used. If you go about midday on the weekend, you might encounter some elementary school kids, but there aren't many then and there aren't hardly, if any otherwise. The less steep of the two was a great hill offering not only a fast ride, but a long one. There was a side path off of this one offered more of an adventure, due to its narrowness. The main hill is a massive drop on top of a high hill. There was a few bumps going down. It is incredibly fast and long, offering a great challenge to those brave enough to attempt it. |
Directions: Cherokee Middle School's Hill, 4301 Cherokee Drive. Located on Cherokee Road and Midvale just north of the Beltline.
Comments: Cherokee school's sled riding hill is spectactular. It's huge, and there are two right in row. (You go down one, you walk about fifty yards, you can go down another.) Because it's so wide, lots of people can be on it and you can still have your own area. By far the largest sledding location in Dane County in acreage. It hosts 3 sledding areas. The first is on the East side by the soccer nets. This is really only used for those coming in on this side as a primer for the real hills, but it is worth doing. The steeper of the next two hills is also the larger of the two. Get ready for about a drop with some bumps along the way. It is a short fast ride down. The nice thing is that the sheer size of this hill allows for many sledders without any worry of collisions. The highest hill has a slightly gentler slope and is also longer. This is a pretty big hill that has some bumps and jumps for those more adventurous. Update data provided by Dane101.com. |
Directions: Sanitarium Hill. Located on Madison’s north side on Northport Road just west of Sherman Avenue. Comments: Steep and it never looks too busy. There is a fence at the bottom of the hill. Does not affect every sledder, but some going far may want to look out for it. Named for the former sanitarium that adorns the top of the hill. This is one huge hill. |
Directions: Ripp Park is located on 5th Street off of Main/Hwy 19. This hill is next to a snowmobile track. The track runs down only one side of the hill, so that leaves nearly 180 degrees of hill to sled down. Comments: The drop varies allowing riders to pick a side for which speed they want to go. This is a fairly slick hill, and you can travel very far on each run and at good speeds. Directions: Peninsula State Park Golf Course - 17th fairway. Take state highway 42 south out of Ephraim towards Fish Creek. You will see the golf course on the right at the top of the hill. Turn on Shore Road into the golf course. Comments: Details on when this hill will be open can be found here. It's really good for tubing, the link also explain restrictions on sled type - no tobaggons are allowed due to high speed gotten on this hill. Directions: Sledding hill at George St. Park. This park is surrounded by George Street, Becker St. and Military Rd. Comments: The George St. Park has bathrooms that are open and drinking fountains are shut off so you may want to bring something to drink. There is no warming house so you may also want to bring a snack. The sledding hill itself does have lights and is NOT monitored by onyone. There is a spot on the far right side of the hill that has a "bunny Hill" (lots of dips purposely made). Sled at your own risk. The bottom of the sledding hill has a bank of snow so that no one can slide into a street or anywhere else. I have personally sled at this hill as a child, and now as an adult, I take my children there all the time and have yet to see anyone get hurt in any way. As for parking you can park on the side of the streets. Directions: Hwy 31 (Green Bay rd) and hwy JR, just west of UW-Parkside. The sledding hill is actually on one of
the holes of the golf course. It is easiest to use the entrance on JR to get to the sledding area. See this link here for an exact location of the hill on a map.
Comments: The park has heated bathrooms as well as shelters to use. Parents tend to allow younger children to walk on the hill, so caution is necessary. There is a smaller sledding hill by the clubhouse on Hwy A. The clubhouse is the actual golf course clubhouse. On the southside of the clubhouse the county has a portable 'tipper' setup for sledding. It is manned by the parks employees. This is not the main sledding hill but is for smaller children if adults think the main sledding hill is too much. Directions: Designated sled riding hill at LaFollette Park, 9418 W. Washington St. An online reviewer said "LaFollette's hill is the perfect place to relax, sit back and enjoy a gentle glide to the bottom with your preschooler. But, it's a long walk back up to the top, so just be sure to put your hands down if you want to cut your run (walk back up) short!"

Comments: Lighted for day or night sledding. There are a few small trees scattered throught the hill (See photo). Parking within 20-30 feet of top of hill. Just open the doors to let the kids out then sit back in the drivers seat with hot chocolate and watch the kids have the time of their lives. Long sled hill. Another reviewer online said "Currie Park might be a golf course, but come winter it becomes a true sledder's paradise! Kids 4 and up should have no problem with the speed or the slope, but those under 3 will need Mom or Dad to navigate, Mind you, this hill is BUSY with dozens of kids sledding at once."
